FAQs

Can I afford it? In the longer term do the benefits outweigh the costs?

We’ve provided a calculator so that you can work out how much the Underwater Bait Setter will save your operation. We know that for most operations the Underwater Bait Setter will pay for itself within 12 months.

Can it be used on my boat – how does it fit?

The Underwater Bait Setter will fit any surface longliner operating around ~1000-1500 hooks per set. It is mounted on the stern of the vessel adjacent to the mainline, and hydraulics can be run directly off the main engine. Trials are underway to adapt the Bait Setter to suit deep set vessels setting 3000 to 4000 hooks a set.

I like it, but its new. How can you help me if I’m not sure?

The Underwater Bait Setter is new longlining technology. The R&D has been exhaustive with thousands of kilometres of lines set in NZ, Uruguay and Australian waters. We know it works. You can remove the majority of the up front cost by leasing it. If you don’t like it, we’ll remove it at our expense.

Who is using it, and do they like it?

It’s new technology with a short history. Even so, those who have used it think it’s great. We are happy to put you in touch with those that are using it so you can hear for yourself from the source. Give us a call and we’ll put you in touch.

“The most important thing for me is that I want to introduce a new concept to the sailors and members of the crew – the concept of responsible fishing – it means avoiding, so far as possible, seabird mortality and irresponsible fishing.”

“It’s easy to use. It keeps bait off the surface and it stops the birds following. It reduces bait loss, and does away with the need for a tori line and night setting.”
